Bob,
You are absolutely correct, the ships pass port side to port side. I was
thinking which way you steer to do this, i.e. you steer to your right or
starboard. The better and right way to think this is to have your port to
his port. It's like with two cars on a narrow road without a center line;
each steers to the right.
