I was going to be a bit more conservative and suggest sparklers.  I 
think they're even still legal in NYC.  You can also establish your 
level of paranoia in the number you display.  It will be a challenging 
exercise to light the new ones from the old ones before they all go out, 
while keeping some vestige of night vision.

Some years ago (30-35) an artist built a light ball that he or she moved 
up and down the river.  I only saw it a time or two, but it was 
impressive.  There seemed to be hundreds of lights.  I have no idea how 
they brought along enough electricity.  This was pre-LEDs, and before 
Honda started making those cute little generators.
