a bit about Maria Coffey:
"My husband Dag Goering and I are expedition kayakers and a
photographer/writer team – we have published a number of books about our
expeditions, (including *A Boat in our Baggage:around the world with a
kayak* and *Visions of the Wild: a voyage by kayak around Vancouver Island*
*)* and often give multi-media presentations about our adventures . We also
own Hidden Places, an adventure travel company specializing in kayaking. For
more information on all our pursuits, please check our website:

Join Maria for this exciting event, which will include an onstage interview
with the Princeton neuroscientist Dr. Sam Wang (author of *Welcome to Your
Brain*), about issues raised in *EXPLORERS OF THE INFINITE* .
What compels extreme adventurers to push at the boundaries of human ability?
And what do they discover on the other side? *EXPLORERS OF THE
INFINITE*unveils some astonishing answers to these questions. In
interviews with
Maria, extreme mountaineers, snowboarders, kayakers, surfers, BASE jumpers
and other athletes reveal extraordinary spiritual transformations and
paranormal experiences. Ranging from fleeting mystical moments to
precognition, psychic communication and encounters with ghosts, these
experiences, Maria argues, are a key part of what drives such adventurers.
Reviewing cutting-edge scientific research, and the history of philosophy
and spirituality, she sets out to discover if the intense state of
"aliveness" that is the allure of extreme sports is a route to transcendence
and paranormal powers.

Advance praise for Explorers of the Infinite:
"No other writer since Jon Krakauer has dared to tackle the taboos, sacred
cows and obsessions of extreme adventurers the way Maria Coffey
does…..Explorers of the Infinite takes you on the ultimate quest into the
heart of the dragon's den."
*Jeff Long, author of The Descent*
"A fascinating examination of one of the most fundamental reasons behind why
we climb, or engage in any kind of challenging activity in nature."
*Lynn Hill, top American rock climber and author of Climbing Free. *
"One finishes the book deeply convinced that she is onto something. Maria is
a fine writer and the book is a tour de force and rousing read."
*Royal Robbins, pioneering American rock climber. *
"Maria Coffey's crafting of story, science and the unexplainable is an
ambitious work of research on extreme adventurers' motives and risks. This
book is a remarkable adventure for the curious mind."
*Sharon Wood, first North American woman to **summit** **Mt.** Everest. *
"The answers in this book are fascinating and ultimately very moving. Coffey
once again proves herself to be a brave writer – one who takes risks that
are worth taking and illuminates matters other writers neglect"
*Clint Willis, author of Boys of Everest.*
"Less a book than a psychospiritual dance, each chapter a flood of
emotional rhythm…within these pages lie dharmic jewels."
*Steve Ilg, author of Total Body Transformation*
