NYCkayaker NYCKayaker Digest, Vol 33, Issue 28

WaterTrail Parks.WaterTrail at parks.nyc.gov

Hi Chalu,

I usually just try to read the listserve and see what is going on. If
you would like a list of the coordinates for the NYC Water Trail launch
sites, just let me know. I have it listed so you can just copy and
paste.

chalu, if you go to the nyc watertrail web page (as opposed to the
physical
printed map) there appear to be coordinates provided for the sites
listed.
you should be able to easily plug those into the google mapping system.
http://www.nycgovparks.org/sub_things_to_do/facilities/kayak/
you might also try contacting Going Coastal, the organization that
created
the maps, to see if they have what you're looking for already put
together.
if you want to contact me back-channel i can give you their contact
info.
for points outside the city have a look at the Hudson River Watertrail
Guide
(available through hrwa.org or locally at NYKayakCo and a few other
places). coordinates are provided there as well.

FYI we are just getting started on the next edition of the guide. if
anyone
is interested in helping survey sites (we are hoping to get improved GPS
data with the better technology available now as well as updates on
physical
conditions at existing sites) or submitting photos, written pieces, etc
for
the next version which we hope will be ready for the 2009 Hudson
Quadricentennial celebrations, please let us know.

I can't plug in since this fancy map is Flash and I can't copy and
paste. Also, it is best to have a wiki system where people can
contribute their launch experiences and such.

We might be able to use Google Earth community which is the best.

I am trying to put together trips starting from these spots as
inter-lauch or inter-club trips with least amount of car support.

Like Hallet to Sebago Club or Like Gowanus to Sebago. Yes, I am a member

of Sebago club at Carnasie.

I am also thinking about using west downwind paddle to Staten Island
where there are three launch points along east shore. I wonder how the
Staten Ferry will treat a car with two kayaks on top.

chalu, i'm afraid you're going to have to do it the old fashioned way:
write down the coordinates on a piece of paper, and then type them into
the
google system!
i know its very 20th century but its a reliable system, aside from the
human-error factor.
FYI, you can probably find "analog" writing supplies online--google
"pencil
and paper".
hehe.
