I'd suggest snagging a copy of Ed Gertler's "Keystone Canoeing", which
is the definitive reference to most PA streams. He goes into considerable
detail on several hundred of them and includes notes on which are
appropriate for self-containined canoe-camping. If you're coming from
Maryland, I'll suggest the Juniata as one possibility; another might
be the Delaware; and another might be the upper parts of the Schuylkill,
which are markedly different from the mistreated river found in Philadelphia.
Since you're thinking of doing this in August, water levels may be a
factor: some of the streams that are running now will likely be too low
to paddle by then. (Which is why I've stuck to larger ones.)
