I don't think that there has been a clear picture of what occurred that
day. My information is second hand. I had not heard that some of the
paddlers were not wearing PFDs.
I do hope that you were not condoning the lack of wearing a PFD.
Wearing a PFD is required and lack of wearing one can never be condoned.
I am going to recommend that HRWA run a program to address some of these
issues. We will discuss this as a program at our Board Meeting
Scheduled for August 25th at 6PM. Obviously everyone on the list is
invited, I am making it an open meeting. Just let us know if you are
planning to attend.
I would expect that Nancy Brous knows the river as well as anyone and
better than most. Perhaps Nancy can coordinate a program and perhaps we
can consider hazards in the Harlem and East Rivers as well and at the
same time. Erik would you consider being involved?
Thanks

With all the traffic and breast beating/finger pointing, aimed at the
recent
kayak race where some of the athletes/paddlers were swept under a moored
barge at the winter garden. Most of the comments were directed at the
athletes who were not wearing PFD's. I pointed out then, that the PFD
Mantra wasn't the cure all, that in spite of PFD's many of these water
hazards will still remain deadly with pfd's.
Most of these are hazards that most local Hudson River paddlers know
nothing
about. Local Discussions to make people aware of these dangers and to
prevent reoccurrences is the best remedy.
I was surprised to see no traffic concerning the city of water day
problems.
