NYCkayaker Mayor's Cup: Bluster and bliss.

Hi All,

A few notes from a minor volunteer (boat loading) for the Mayor's Cup.

The Hudson River was a little nutty at the start of the Mayor's Cup this
morning (winds slightly exceeded the 25-knot permit limit) so the event was
reduced to the elite category of paddlers -- especially the Dutch and
American teams. The number of participants dropped to fewer than half of
those who arrived, which clearly pained dedicated organizer Ray Fusco. Set
up was pretty miserable in a steady, albeit light, rain. All were in good
spirits, however, and voiced continuing support for Ray and the event.

Water conditions weren't too bad. Chop and white caps and some steep waves
with tight periods, but it seems much of it was straight on. I didn't see
the Harlem River, but that's a sheltered place. The East River bridges had
strong winds whipping their spans but the winding waterway was quite smooth.
Without the Hudson's straightaway, there are no fetches upon which waves can
build up.

I'm only slightly aware of other events and concerns on athletes' calendars,
but hear they affected planning. That might answer why this event was held a
little late in the season for comfort.

But overall, I'm glad we tried until the last moment and wish weather and
sleep permitted me to cheer from Mill Rock!

And one small moment put everything in perspective. Ray was tremendously
disappointed that on his third anniversary cancer free the event foundered a
bit on weather worries. But celebrating that milestone isn't nearly so
rewarding as the thing itself -- the being alive. Ray, we'd be glad to have
you around even every kayak by magic turned into a pumpkin.

Warm regards,

Erik
