Well...This should be very interesting. Let's see how many beginner paddlers with not enough skill level end up like a frog in a blender with that boat traffic and those currentsIt is ironic-----almost poetry though--because I seem to recall a trip not so long ago that you and another kayaker lead- that had folks bailing in the middle of the river-jumping out of kayaks- and many swimming for the seawall..... A pretty messy situation that could have been avoided by letting folks take the free ferry back.

i was unaware that the policy for using the kayak dock at Governor's Island
had changed this year.
in the past, to land there you had to be with a group whose insurance was
filed with GIPEC, had to name GIPEC on your policy, and had to check with
them in advance of landing for permission to do so.
well, apparently all that changed and the new policy is much more
welcoming--the only problem was that they neglected to post it anywhere (not
even their own website) nor did they tell most of us boaters! oops!
the following is a direct quote from an email i just received from leslie
koch of GIPEC.
<<are you aware that the kayak dock at Governors Island is open to any
kayaker who wants to use it? The dock is open during our public access hours
which are Fridays through Sundays from May 30th to October 11th, 10 to 5 on
Fridays, 10 to 7 on Saturdays and Sundays. Following feedback from some
individuals in the kayaking community last year, we worked with the Downtown
Boathouse to eliminate the requirement that only organized groups with
appropriate permits and insurance use the dock.
Now anyone with a kayak can dock there and has been able to do so for the
entire time the island has been open this year. No insurance or permit is
required.>>
i hope lots and lots of kayakers rowers and conoeists will take advantage of
this over the next 2 weeks to show GIPEC how many of us will use the launch
in the future and how much we appreciate them!
please share the info far and wide and happy autumn boating!
