Another solution is a waterproof case such as one uses for diving.
I have a Canon A640 with a case made by Canon (WP-DC8).
It floats and the camera fits perfectly.

I agree with everything that has thus far been said about the overall quality of point&shoots however I do have another way of looking at this topic.
My preferred camera is a Nikon SLR with a 35 - 350mm Tamron zoom lens. I do not have a deep enough pocket however to risk it in my yak.
For that I take my Olympus 1050SW waterproof, shockproof, 3 3/4" x 2 3/8" x 7/8" fits easily in my PF... er life jacket pocket. I would classify it as a piece of sh-t except for on the water use where it gets the job done without fear of sea spray/ capsizing/ dropping etc. Its 3 or 5 second warm up & 2 or 3 seconds between shots drives me crazy but it gets the job done & I have pictures/memories of my trips & paddle mates with no fear of losing another camera (another story).
although I appreciate the picture quality of a better camera most paddlers want images that preserve memories and look at it as carrying a camera, as unobtrusively as possible, while paddling as opposed to taking a kayak while shooting pictures.
BTW if you end up buying a waterproof camera be aware that they don't float and although the camera might be quite happy on the bottom of the Hudson they are rather hard to use from there, so get a leash for it and clip it to your flotation aid.
