NYCkayaker Lives: Capsized ...

I find it ironic that the author's book takes the high cost of cutting
corners, albeit in a different sector, for its subject. I'm glad they're
okay, and they seem to realize that they deserve a good amount of
tut-tutting (as indicated by inclusion of the "fools" quotation), which many
on this list can't resist delivering. :)

We traffic in these stories at this tie each year. There's always room for
new or revived ways to get the safety word out, though these two
well-educated people would give every appearance of sanity and awareness.
Ultimately, of course, this is a matter of individual responsibility. As a
community, however, we'd do well to cover all bases. As we bring more and
more inner city kids onto the water, we might partner with the American
Canoe Association or some such group to get safe paddling materials into
schools.

Best regards,

Erik
