Just a reminder that a week from tomorrow, August 17, from 10:30 AM to 2:30
pm, the Long Island City Community Boathouse and a bunch of partner
organizations will be offering free public kayaking in Stuyvesant Cove
Park. Participants must know how to swim, be at least 18 years old or
attend with a parent or guardian, and must sign insurance waivers. All
equipment is provided free, and participation will be on a first-come
first-paddling basis.

Nestled in a bend in the shoreline near East 20th Street and partially
protected from East River currents, Stuyvesant Cove is the best East River
access point for human-powered boating in Lower Manhattan. The City Council
has recently recognized that in the form of a $1 million allocation to
construct a kayak dock there. What's needed now is a new or existing group
of local boaters that can adopt the site to ensure safe access and ongoing
stewardship.

We hope next Saturday's event will help inspire that effort. Let us know if
you're interested in volunteering, or just stop by to take a paddle and
show your support. And thanks to all the groups that have helped make this
possible: LICCB, NYCWTA, Urban Swim, the Lower East Side Ecology Center,
the S.W.I.M. Coalition, the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club, Solar One and the
NYC Economic Development Corporation.
