From rsk@rockandwater.net Thu Mar 2 08:28:29 2017 From: rsk@rockandwater.net (Rich Kulawiec) Date: Thu, 2 Mar 2017 08:28:29 -0500 Subject: The return of the whitewater mailing list: April 25, 2017 Message-ID: <20170302132829.GA31918@gsp.org> This mailing list has been hibernating for a very long time, but it seems the time is right to revive it. Charles Daffinger sent the first message to the first instantiation of this list on April 25, 1987, so it seems apropos to relaunch on the anniversary of that date. It's been a long time. No doubt some of you have even forgotten you're even on it. ;) This list was mothballed because of the rise of Usenet's rec.boats.paddle; but unfortunately the consolidation of much of Usenet led to a severe decrease in abuse control, and that newsgroup was heavily impacted by sustained spam and trolls and other problems. It became unusuable, and one by one, people drifted away. You might wonder why I'm bringing it back. After all, there are all kinds of other ways for us to communicate these days. I'm bringing it back because mailing lists continue to be the best technology for group discussions. See this page: Why Use Mailing Lists? http://www.rockandwater.net/why-mailing-lists.html And I'm bringing it back to life because we were a community, and we can be again. This was the place where many of us first communicated with paddlers we'd never met, where we shared stories of epic swims, and where we argued about class III vs. class IV. We carried all that to rec.boats.paddle, but then lost it. Time to bring it back. I'm also building a public archive of rec.boats.paddle, a precursor project to a MUCH larger paddling archive. I'm going to need your help. I imagine that some of you don't want to be on the whitewater list any more: you can unsubscribe yourself easily either: (a) by email to whitewater-request@rockandwater.net or (b) via http://www.rockandwater.net/mailman/listinfo/whitewater or (c) you can drop me a line and I'll do it for you. But if you do want to be on here, (1) please stick around (2) please tell everyone that you know from clubs, trips, rec.boats.paddle, etc. to sign up -- using (a) or (b) above, (c) if they get really stuck. ---rsk Rich Kulawiec rsk@rockandwater.net
